In 2004, Alan and Lisa started new jobs as public school teachers in New Jersey. Like many teachers, they were excited to share the joy of teaching in the classroom. Unfortunately, like many teachers, I found it difficult to find high-quality resources to help my students succeed, and I soon realized that the school budget was too tight to purchase new learning software to supplement my lesson plans. I took notice.

Free online options were not a good option either. In Alan’s words, they were “an endless maze of violence, difficulty to navigate, and inappropriate advertising!” Nevertheless, Alan was undaunted. His self-taught knowledge of programming and experience as a graphic designer enabled him to take matters into his own hands.

In an effort to gamify educational courses, Alan developed several learning activities for computer classes. He came up with a fun domain name, ABCya.com, to host the games and began using it with his students. Soon after, I realized that other teachers were also using his site in their classrooms, but they didn’t realize that the creator of the site was a colleague of mine.

Alan continued to develop and improve his games for ABCya.com and eventually expanded to creating standalone apps. In 2011, his Math BINGO app soared to the top of the iTunes store in the Education category. It also appeared on his Apple website and was installed on demo iPads in hundreds of Apple retail stores across the United States. Currently, ABCya Tabletop’s games and apps are played by millions of users each month, with over 1 billion games played each year.

In 2018, ABCya was acquired by his IXL Learning. Through its partnership with IXL, the ABCya team remains committed to the company’s founding philosophy of creating educational games that make learning fun.
